Things to See in Southeast Florida

  1. Cape Florida State Park: Cape Florida State Park, located at the south tip of Key Biscayne, provides clear, emerald-colored waters and gentle surf. This fine, white coral sand beach is great for swimming, as waves are knocked down by a large sand shoal offshore. In addition, the Cape Florida Lighthouse allows for a breath-taking view of this beautiful beach.
  2. Coral Castle: Coral Castle is truly a monument to the uniqueness of Miami! This attractions was built by a Latvian-born Miami resident named Ed Leedskalnin as a monument to his lover. After 28 years of effort, he introduced his 1100-ton coral creation to the world. It's a bit of a trip from downtown, but well worth the time. website
  3. Dry Tortugas National Park: Dry Tortugas National Park is a national park in the United States about 68 statute miles west of Key West in the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to Fort Jefferson you can enjoy the beaches, some of the best snorkeling and skin diving in North America, and camp under the stars.
  4. Ernest Hemingway House: officially known as the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, was the residence of author Ernest Hemingway in Key West. Ernest Hemingway lived and wrote here for more than ten years. Calling Key West home, he found solace and great physical challenge in the turquoise waters that surround this tiny island. Key West is also the southernmost point of the United States and connected to the mainland by a long causeway from Miami.
  5. Everglades National Park: is a U.S. National Park in Florida that protects the southern 20 percent of the original Everglades. It is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States ... species like the manatee, American crocodile, and the elusive Florida panther.
  6. Everglades Alligator Farm: Visit the everglades, Florida's last natural untapped reserves. Ride one of our fantastic guided airboat tours.   7. Holocaust Memorial: The Holocaust Memorial of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation is a Holocaust memorial at 1933-1945 Meridian Avenue, in Miami Beach, Florida. It was conceived by a committee of Holocaust survivors in 1984, formally established in 1985 as the Holocaust Memorial Committee, a non-profit organization .website
  8. Jungle Island: Jungle Island (formerly known as Parrot Jungle) offers visitors a fun, educational opportunity to get an up-close look at tropical birds in replicas of their natural habitats. The attraction routinely hosts field trips and offers frequent educational programs. website

While homo sapiens walk through carefully constructed wire pathways, many species of primates scamper above your head, swing through trees and interact with each other in ways difficult to observe in captivity. website
  11. Seaquarium: The Miami Seaquarium is located right in the middle of the tourist area, on the causeway between downtown Miami and Key Biscayne. It's a fabulous stop where you can witness an outdoor aquarium experience that's only possible in our tropical climate.

  14. Vizcaya: No visit to Miami is complete without a stop at the historical 50-acre Vizcaya estate. This European-style mansion offers a glimpse at life in turn-of-the-century South Florida. It's also an extremely popular venue for galas, weddings and other entertainment events. website
  15. Zoo Miami: Zoo Miami is fast becoming one of the best zoos in the nation. Its climate allows it to keep a wide variety of animals from Asia, Australia and Africa like no other zoo in the country. One of the first free-range zoos in the country, the exhibits are entirely cageless. Animals are grouped according to their geographic territory and animals that live together peacefully in the wild are placed in exhibits together.

  2. Sanibel Island: a barrier island is world renowned for its shelling beaches and the "Sanibel Stoop". In the travel industry Sanibel Island is a top Florida destination for visitors. website
  3. Captiva Island: Like Sanibel Island it is known for its shelling beaches. According to local folklore, Captiva got its name because the pirate captain JosĆ© Gaspar held his female prisoners on the island for ransom.  website

  7. Bird Gardens of Naples: The Bird Gardens of Naples is a nonprofit whose sole concern is parrot welfare in captivity and conservation of wild parrots. We are an outreach and placement program which places into safe custody, parrots which are abandoned, abused, or in need of a home for any reason website
  8. Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve:The Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve is over 3,400 acres of a wetland ecosystem. A myriad of animals like otters, alligators, turtles, wading birds, and more live at the Slough (pronounced "slew") year round. Others, like migrating birds and butterflies use the Slough as a feeding area or a winter home  website
  9. Peace River Wildlife Center & Ponce De Leon Park: located in Punta Gorda, Florda and offer a safe rescue destination for wildlife. The center is located in the mangroves overlooking Charlotte Harbor right inside of the park. It began in 1978 and has been dedicated to care, rescue, protection and preservation of small native wildlife ever since. It grew quickly and became a reputable safe haven for injured wild animals.   12. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary: Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000 acre Preserve and is home to the largest remaining stand of old growth bald cypress in North America. A 2.25 mile boardwalk trail is open to the public daily. website

Fort Myers Beach: Heaped with sugar-sand, Fort Myers Beach is a popular destination for visitors eager to engage in watersports such as parasailing and kayaking – or just as eager to simply relax on the inviting beach.   15. Jet Blue Park: JetBlue Park at Fenway South is a baseball park in Fort Myers, Florida, part of the Fenway South training and development facility. Arcadia Rodeo: The Arcadia All-Florida Championship Rodeo is a non-profit organization that was established in 1952 by the Arcadia Rodeo Association, which evolved from a group of American Legion Members who held the first rodeo in 1929.It is the oldest rodeo organization in the state of Florida, and benefits all of Arcadia and DeSoto County. website

  25. Southwest Florida Museum of History: Housed in the former Atlantic Coastline Railroad depot. Things to see in Central East Florida

  9. African American Museum of the Arts - Founded in 1994 and located in historic DeLand, the seat of Volusia County Government, AAMA is a unique and vital resource in this part of Florida. It is the only museum in the area devoted primarily to African American cultures and art.        

  10. Sands Theater Center & Athens Theatre - This beautifully restored theatre, with state-of-the-art production facilities, is the perfect venue for films, concerts, and a diverse array of stage performances and educational events.

Things to see in Central West Florida

  8. Museum of Science and Industry - The largest science center in the Southeastern United States and home of the first IMAX Dome Theatre, the only theater of its kind in Florida. Get blown away in the Gulf Coast Hurricane exhibit. Cruise the galaxy in The Saunders Planetarium.         

  9. Henry B. Plant Museum - This quintessential Victorian palace features unique Moorish revival architecture and dramatic minarets.   12. Ted Williams Museum of Hitters Hall of Fame - Swing by the Ted Williams Museum & Hitters Hall of Fame and relive some of baseball's most spectacular days.
