Alabama: Things to Do and See

  1. 16th Street Baptist Church: The church was the first African American church in Birmingham, and the site of many civil rights rallies and mass meetings, as well the site of a bombing in 1963 that killed four girls attending Sunday School, a tragedy that added fire to the movement
  2. Alabama Constitution Village: Costumed guides lead tours of the bakery, trade shops, library and post office located at the site of the 1819 Constitutional Convention.
  3. Alabama Music Hall of Fame: This site honors the musical achievements of Alabamians such as Tammy Wynette, the Commodores, Nat King Cole and Hank Williams.
  4. Birmingham Zoo: Learn about the 750 animals that call the zoo home, including sea lions, kangaroos, elephants and endangered species from six continents.
  5. Dexter Avenue King Baptist Church and Parsonage Museum: Visit the church where Martin Luther King Jr. was pastor from 1954-1960.
  6. FAME Recording Studios: Step back in time at the studio where Aretha Franklin, Little Richard, Etta James, Otis Redding and others have recorded hit songs.
  7. Frank Lloyd Wright Rosenbaum House Museum: An American treasure, this house was built in 1939 and is the only Wright house in the southeast open to the public.
  8. Hank Williams Museum: Suits, hats, awards, rare videos and a 1952 Cadillac are just a few things you'll find in this extensive collection.
  9. Helen Keller’s Birthplace and Home: Built in 1820, Helen Keller’s home is located in Tuscumbia. See firsthand where this admired woman overcame her handicaps.
  10. Huntsville Botanical Garden: Spread over 112 lush acres, the Huntsville Botanical Garden boasts 14 themed herb gardens and 675 varieties of day lilies.

  16. Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark: Now a museum of history and industry, Sloss Furnaces has become a center for creation and exhibition of metal art.
  17. Talladega Superspeedway: Featuring the longest NASCAR oval, Talladega Superspeedway is beloved by all racing fans.
  18. USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park: Explore the mighty USS Alabama, winner of nine battle stars in World War II.   19. U.S. Space & Rocket Center: in Huntsville, Alabama is a museum operated by the government of Alabama, showcasing rockets, achievements, and artifacts of the U.S. space program.
  20. Vulcan Park & Museum: Home to the world’s largest cast-iron statue, the site also features interactive exhibits and spectacular panoramic views of Birmingham.
