Michigan: Things to Do and See

  1. Mackinac Bridge is currently the fifth longest suspension bridge in the world. In 1998, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan became the longest with a total suspension of 12,826 feet. The Mackinac Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere. The total length of the Mackinac Bridge is 26,372 feet. The length of the suspension bridge (including anchorages) is 8,614 feet. The length from cable bent pier to cable bent pier is 7,400 feet. Length of main span (between towers) is 3,800 feet.
  2. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: encompasses a 60 km (35 mi.) stretch of Lake Michigan's eastern coastline, as well as North and South Manitou Islands. The park was established primarily for its outstanding natural features, including forests, beaches, dune formations and ancient glacial phenomena. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore also contains many cultural features including an 1871 lighthouse
  3. Motawi Tile Tour: You can browse the Motawi Tile studio gallery, meet their staff, learn about their company history, and observe the tile-making process firsthand. Tours typically last 60-90 minutes and are best for ages 8 to adult. website
  4. Eben Ice Cave: The “Rock River Canyon Ice Caves” better known as the Eben Ice Caves, form when melting snow runs over the edge of a small cliff and freezes, forming “ice caves” Much like the large ice formations, if you were to visit here in the summer you would see little to no water running over the edge.
  5. Henry Ford Museum: Located in Dearborn is a 12-acre site that houses an incredible collection of Americana: antique machinery, automobiles, locomotives, and other pop culture artifacts.
